1. Introduction
The Institute of Lightwave Technology (ILT) of Beijing Jiaotong University was built up in June of 1987 by Professor Shuisheng Jian, who is a member of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and a famous scientist in Optical communication, Optical switching, Optical sensing, Optoelectronic devices. In 2002, the lab was approved to be Key Laboratory of All Optical Network and Advanced Telecommunication Network by the Ministry of Education, China.
In the past 30 years, lots of research achievements have been obtained in areas of special fiber, fiber device, optical sensing, all optical switching, etc. under the leadership of Professor Jian. More than 80 Ph. D graduated from the ILT, some of whom are experts, professors, or CEO all over the world.
Now there are 25 faculties in the lab, including 9 Professors, 11 associated Professors, 5 assistant Professors. The research areas include All Optical Switching Network, Novel Special Fiber and Devices, Smart Fiber Sensing Technology, Electromagnetic Theory & Microwave Engineering.
2. Research Areas
Area 1: All Optical Switching Network
In present optical fiber communication system, the transmission part totally employs photonics technology, while the switching part still use the electronic technology, which limits the data transfer rate. With the realization of All Optical Switching Network, the data transfer rate will be up to more than 1015bps. What's more, All Optical Switching Network can save more than 99% of energy compared with the circuit switching network.

Area 2: Novel Special Fiber and Devices
The design and fabrication of different kinds of special fibers, including Er-, Yb-, Tm- doped fibers, Double-clad fibers, Twin-core fibers, Multi-core fibers, Photonic crystal fibers, Large mode area fibers, etc. and their applications in fiber lasers, fiber sensors, optical fiber gyro, optical communication, etc.

Area 3: Smart Fiber Sensing Technology
The theory, design, fabrication of different fiber sensors and their applications in temperature/strain monitoring, safe monitoring, train locating, etc. The theory, design, fabrication of Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and their applications in optical sensing, dispersion compensation, optical add/drop multiplexing, fiber lasers, all optical signal processing, etc.

Area 4: Electromagnetic Theory & Microwave Engineering
Theory and design of leaky coaxial cable; Theory and characterization of high-rate radio link under confined environment; Theory and design of wideband planar antennas and pulse antennas; Scattering theory and RCS techniques for antenna array; Theory and design of leaky wave antennas; Theory and design of Millimeter Wave antennas and array; Theory of transformation-optics and the design of metamaterial-based antennas.
